My Beloved Maggie Mae
This is what she looked like when I first met her. She had been neglected (divorce) and was underweight. Mr J was opposed to me having a horse at that time, but I knew how he operated... We would never be ready unless the horse was here! So I bought her one day when he was at work. I think it's the maddest he's ever been with me. But it was love at first site for him too, and he quickly got over it and started looking for his own horse!
Meet Molly
She was the sweetest little trail horse. She got along great with Maggie. Mr J and I would ride them along the bike path (that's allowed here) until they decided it was time to go home.
Of course, with two horses comes some basic needs...
Stalls aren't a necessity, but they are very handy. Horses need shelter and a place to eat. (..and a cat to keep the mice away.)
Horses also need hay...
Actually, they need grass. Pasture. But we, like a lot of people, don't have enough pasture available for grazing 24/7, so hay becomes a necessity.
Horses need a place to get out of the sun and the wind. We have this run-in shelter behind the barn in the paddock.
Now it seems as though we have everything we need... right? This would be a great place for, 'and they lived happily ever after.' But Mr J's head got turned...
Meet Misty...
a.k.a. Crazy Horse
That's what I called her. It's too long a story to post here, but let's just say it's one of Mr J's biggest regrets! He traded Molly, plus a bunch of cash, for this gaited beast. You may sense that I was not particularly fond of Misty. Would you like something that tried to kill you?
She could change moods in a nanosecond. Too bad it took us longer to be rid of her!
Don't let that blue eye fool you! Yeah, sure... that little Mickey Mouse head on the side makes her look sweet... Looks are deceiving!
Good riddance Misty!
The only thing good to come from that experience...
Nekoda!
She is smart and always in trouble! Inquisitive is an understatement! She lived at the same farm as Misty. (...and Elvis - see the goat tab.)
I love her dearly. Nekoda and Maggie are the best things about living on the farm!
We found another previous owner (a dealer) of Misty's that actually wanted her back! He had a nice ol' farm gelding that was gentle enough for Mr J. We hauled Misty to Tennessee, and hauled our Buddy home.
His name was Lucky...
His markings weren't as striking as Misty's, but he wasn't crazy! We weren't crazy either... about the name. Mr J just started calling him Buddy. (It's what he calls everybody.) He commented to the vet about not liking the name Lucky. The vet said, "I've known a lot of dogs named Lucky that weren't very Lucky!" The name was history...
So we needed a new name. I said, "What's wrong with Buddy? He looks like a sweet Buddy."
So, to wrap it up, we went from Maggie...
to this...
to this...
to this.
Oh, how I wish this was the happy ending...
In case you missed it, here is the story I posted in October, 2010,
shortly after we buried Buddy.
So for now, this is our herd...
